The windshield wiper is one of the crucial parts of a car that assists in removing water, rain, dirt, etc. to ensure a safe drive and good view for the driver. There are three components to it: the lower arm, the plastic or metal that joins the rubber wiper blade, and the lower arm. It is imperative to repair any of these parts if they sustain damage.

Although it’s equally simple to change them yourself, you might take your car to the mechanic to get them changed. For the vast majority of cars on the road, the fitting procedure is the same. However, if you are unsure of how to replace a car wiper, read this blog to find out.

Steps to Replace Windshield Wiper

Step 1: Know Which Part Requires Changing

As stated earlier, windshield wipers comprise three parts. Windshield wipers are made with three basic parts: the lower wiper arm that extends from the base of the windshield, the metal or plastic blade attached to the lower arm, and the rubber blade that actually wipes the windshield. Usually, a rubber blade is changed, which is susceptible to damages due to water or constant unpleasant weather. If you also notice any cracks on your car’s windshield wipers, make sure to replace them.

Step 2: Measure the Damaged Blades’ Size to get Replacements

Using a measuring tape or ruler, count the number of worn-out rubber blades on your car. Make a note of the measurement and buy new blades using that information. Keep in mind that the left wiper’s blade is about an inch or two smaller than the right wiper’s, thus each has different sizes.

Step 3: Lift the Metal Wiper Arm from Car’s Windshield

Hold the metal wiper in correlation (perpendicular) to the windscreen of your car. You must be careful in this step when holding the wiper because it has a spring made of metal. It could bounce and smash the glass of your car if you don’t grip it securely.

Step 4: Unhook the Old and Damaged Wiper Blade

Look at the connection between the metal arm and the rubber wiper blade. A tiny plastic stopper that holds the blade in place should be present. To remove the old wiper blade from the metal arm, depress the stopper and hook it.

Note that

  • Instead of hooks, you can discover pins that hold rubber wiper blades.
  • Throughout the entire operation, make sure one hand is keeping the wiper away from the windshield.
  • Keep your wipers away from the windshield of your car. As an alternative, you can shield the windscreen from harm when changing the wiper in this operation by covering it with a towel that has been folded.

Step 5: Install the New Wiper Blade

After pulling out the old wiper, insert the new wiper into the same end of the wiper arm. Rotate this new wiper slowly until the hook holds it in place. Reposition the replacement wiper against the windshield. To replace another wiper, use this similar approach. Purchase wiper blades that are the proper size for both sides.

Pointers

  • Make careful to look for cracks in your wipers.
  • When it rains the next time, pay attention to your wipers.
  • A broken wiper won’t be able to completely clean the windshield, which could make it harder for you to see what’s in front of the vehicle.
  • Damaged wipers’ metallic bits could scrape the windshield.

How to Maintain your car Windshield Wipers

  • Before applying the wipers, defrost and scrape
  • At least twice a year, replace the blades
  • Maintain a clean windshield
  • Never use the wipers on a windscreen that is dry
  • The Blades Should Be Repositioned During the Cold season
